Thaddeus Lowe. Thaddeus Lowe was the first person to fly in a civil war hot air balloon in 1863. Thaddeus took a nine hour, nine hundred mile flight from Cincinnati, Ohio to Unionville, South Carolina.
On his way to South Carolina he flew over Fort Sumter he was caught and had ben arrested him , being accused of spying for the union.
